This 58-minute documentary follows the journey of THEO-MUSIC project. It tells the story of an experiment: what happens when Theatre of the Oppressed, Deep Listening and radical musical improvisation enter the same space?

The documentary introduces the ideas at the heart of THEO-MUSIC and explores how its methodology developed through dialogue, practical experimentation and transnational cooperation.

The journey begins with the project two international online seminars. The first presents Theatre of the Oppressed as a participatory approach through which people and communities can identify oppression, examine its roots and collectively rehearse possible responses. Contributions from Italy and Palestine connect the methodology with lived experiences of conflict, cultural resistance and social transformation. The second seminar enters through the art of listening, presenting Deep Listening and “humanistic listening” as practices for communication, empathy, awareness and conflict transformation.

The documentary then moves into the project’s two transnational training courses in Rome and Limassol. Footage from the workshops shows bodies, gestures, images, sounds, silence and live musical improvisation gradually becoming part of a shared language. Music does not simply accompany the theatre: it reveals emotions, tensions and relationships that words alone may not express.

The film also documents the development and piloting of the THEO-MUSIC Toolkit. Adult educators, artists, musicians, social workers, volunteers, community practitioners and members of migrant communities tested its activities and contributed feedback that helped refine the final resource. The multiplier events and final international conference subsequently opened the methodology to wider audiences and created new opportunities for exchange, networking and future cooperation.

More than a record of completed activities, the documentary captures the emergence of a distinctive educational practice. It shows how listening, theatre and sound can support expression, collective awareness and the search for change, without requiring participants to be professional actors or trained musicians.

The documentary accompanies the freely available THEO-MUSIC Toolkit in English, Greek and Italian. Subtitles and a written transcript support accessibility and allow the project’s experience to continue travelling to new practitioners, organisations and communities.
